What to know when bringing your own boat to Folly
If you intend on bringing your boat to Folly Beach, whether towing in for fishing or sailing, or toting it behind your vehicle on a trailer, you first need to figure out where you can stay. Of course it goes without saying that those towing in for fishing or sailing larger craft will need to be more experienced boaters with a plan to learn the waterways for safe operation.
For those with larger boats, deep water properties are a great choice. Many of these rental homes have private deep water docks fully equipped with a fish cleaning station, electricity, running water and refrigerator.
If you’re looking to dock at a marina, then Sunset Cay Marina is one option. And the name certainly fits-this is one of the best places on the island to catch sunsets, along with the Folly Beach Pier. While you’re there, sip on a cool drink at the marina bar and make some new friends while relaxing and enjoying the spectacular views.
Mariner’s Cay has a private marina that can accommodate vessels up to 60 feet. Located on Folly River on the northwest side of the Folly Bridge, the complex is located only a mile from the aforementioned pier, and is also a short walk to the dining, shops and bars along Center Street.
Another area, Turn of River, offers condos for rent on the Folly River just across the water from the public boat landing. Much like Mariner’s Cay, the downtown hub is mere minutes away on the other side of the Folly Bridge.
Maybe you own a smaller boat and you’re just looking for a vacation property with a driveway or covered area to accommodate your watercraft. There is an array of rental homes with access to spacious parking to contain your boats, trailers, jet skis, etc. Online descriptions of property amenities typically specify whether a house provides sufficient boat parking.
For convenient access to cruising Folly’s scenic waterways and the Atlantic, The Folly River Boat Ramp is the island’s public boat landing, located at Center Street. The landing offers ample room for trailer parking and trailer positioning.
Those adventurous seafarers planning to bring their boat to Folly will also want make sure they are adhering to City of Folly boating rules. You can stow your boat on the beachfront for 12 hours without a permit, but you are prohibited from pulling them up into the dunes or sand fences. Additionally, boats must be removed from the beach if high winds or tides are expected. You can obtain a permit to stow watercraft on Folly by calling 843-588-2433.
