Teetering on the Edge at Wild Blue Ropes

Wild Blue Ropes is an adventure course located on James Island in front of Bi-Lo on Folly Road. The course is divided into sections, with each getting progressively more difficult. The hardest level, “black”, requires the challenger to overcome a fear of heights, incorporates dexterity with balance, requires good upper body strength, and forces them to look inward for courage.

To say the course is thrilling would be an understatement. For beginners, stepping out onto a tight wire for the first time can be daunting. However, a secure tethering system is in place to keep you from falling off of the course. When you first arrive, one of the Wild Blue Ropes guides will walk you through putting on your gear, adjusting your belts, and then how to attach yourself to the wires safely. As you move your way through each element, you are always secure. If you happen to slip, you’ll simply swing in place until you get back on your feet.

This course is sure to bring out your adventurous spirit, a way to test yourself and experience an intensely fun adrenaline rush. Walking across ropes, crawling through swinging tunnels, maneuvering around and across shaky wooden bridges, and swinging across knotted ropes to the other side can be exciting ways to spend an afternoon. The course is regularly used by companies for team building exercises, and employees learn to overcome their fears and work together.

There is also a level specifically for young children or children with special needs. It is located just a few feet from the ground and offers ways for children to enjoy the ropes without the increased challenge of the adult course.

For this writer, the course was inherently fun yet terrifying. The scariest part to me, though absolutely safe, is jumping from platforms located on two levels. You’re attached to a wire that drops slowly so you can to land softly on the ground, but don’t be surprised if you don’t land on your feet the first time. It’s a bit of a trick, but possible, and it’s a whole lot of fun to be on the ropes. Plan on spending hours on the ropes when you go. Time goes quickly up there. Before you know it, an entire afternoon will have passed. How many elements can you get through? Find out and let us know!
