Folly Beach Surf Camps

Folly Beach offers many opportunities for visitors and residents to enjoy the magical experiences of natural wonder and beauty on the edge of America.  Children of all ages may be found walking along the shoreline seeking shells, starfish or other unexpected items that have been deposited by the ever-lapping Atlantic waves.  For more adventurous types, there is the chance to head further into the ocean and enjoy more interactive involvement with the ocean by picking up surfboards, paddleboards or kayaks.  For those who don’t know how to surf, skilled local guides are available for private lessons.  Intensive surf camps have been organized for young people, ages 6-15, to learn the form, timing and techniques of catching perfect wave.

Families who are visiting the area or locals whose children want to experience the Folly lifestyle in full often sign them up for one of the many camps available in the area, as this offers a unique challenge to pick up a fun new sport that may enhance their life skills by encouraging focus, higher swimming skills, working together with others in the surf, as well as learning balance, maneuverability, and timing.  Most of the instructors are certified lifeguards with CPR training and offer classes ranging in 3-1 to 6-1 class sizes, so children are safe and are able to make the most of their time with their teachers.  Classes are often held first thing in the morning before the blazing temperatures have reached their maximum heights, and waves are licking the shores with the pending tide change.  Soft curls forming out in the surf create an ambience of tranquility, yet challenge children to reach their own budding potential while using their newly learned surfing techniques.

Boards are provided for the camps and are available in 6’, 8’ or 9’.  Kids at all skill levels can learn new tricks and the instructors are ready to augment and fine tune both shortboard and longboard wave riding dexterity.  Kai Dilling, owner of Sol Surfers, has been running his Billabong certified camp since 2006.  His training and guidance for kids 8-15 years old has provided many students with the confidence to participate in many tournaments in the area, and quite a few of his students have placed in competitions such as the recent Ladies’ Wahine Tournament last month.  His camp offers a shuttle for each of the 5 days of training, snacks, all gear required, and a Sol Surf Camp T-shirt.  Get more information about Sol Surf Camp here:  http://solsurfers.net/Camp/Surf%20Camp

Charleston Surf Lessons, owned by Josh Wilson, is supported by the new Tides Hotel and McKevlin’s Surf Shop.  For new surfers, they can expect to be up on their boards to show off for friends and family by the end of the week.  Sessions run from Memorial Day to Labor day, and information can be found here: http://www.charlestonsurflessons.com/surf-camp-pricing.php
