Run for the Coast: Folly’s 10K Eco-Run

You run for your heath, for stress relief, for fun. But why not run for Folly Beach too? The Run for the Coast is set for September 22 at 8 a.m. and benefits the Charleston Chapter of the Surfrider Foundation.

Unlike most charity races, Run for the Coast runners will actually run their 10K on the beach and in the sand. The race starts on the beach side of the TIDES Hotel at 1 Center Street. The race is planned during low tide, so the sand will be packed, and the beach will be wide enough for plenty of runners.

Another unique aspect of Run for the Coast is the race’s commitment to protecting the environment. There will be on-site recycling and composting; race registration is online or in-person only; race materials will be biodegradable, recyclable, or organic; and no plastic bottles will be used. Racers are encouraged to bring their own water bottles and to carpool or bike to the event. Additionally, proceeds from the race benefit the Charleston Chapter of the Surfrider Foundation, which is “dedicated to the protection and enjoyment of the world’s oceans, waves, and beaches for all people, through conservation, activism, research, and education (C.A.R.E.)”

If you want to run or walk, early registration is $35 and runs through September 15 at midnight. Late registration will go from September 16 through September 19 and is $40. Registration for children 12 and under is $15. You can also register in-person during packet pickup on Friday, September 21 from 5 to 8 p.m. or Saturday September 22 from 6:30 to 7:45 a.m. Visit the Run for the Coast’s web site (www.RunForTheCoast.com) to register and for more event details.

Race-day volunteers are also needed for registration and distribution of race packets, event set up and clean up, race-course guidance, water and food stations, and start and finish line support. All volunteers will get a Run for the Coast T-shirt. If you’re interested, contact race founder Jeremy Wasko at RunForTheCoast10K@gmail.com or visit www.RunForTheCoast.com.
