Exchange Club Oyster Roast

The Folly Beach Exchange Club hosted an oyster roast Sunday at Bowen’s Island. The All You Can Eat roast was a fundraiser for their continuing efforts to provide the community with support. The Club has been in operation since 1951 and has regular opportunities for people to come out and show their support. Tickets for this event sold for just $25 or $10 for non-oyster eaters. Attendees noshed on oysters, chili, hot dogs and homemade sweets provided by members of the Exchange Club. Adult beverages were provided for a small cost, but we were all encouraged to bring coolers with our favorite drinks.

Proceeds from previous events have been delegated toward patriotic flag displays at the pier and boat landing on Folly Beach, free child ID and DNA kits to families, prevention of and awareness activities regarding child abuse, holiday meals for seniors, training for Police Officers to recognize signs of abuse, HALOS, Darkness to Light, and many other recognitions of those who have gone above and beyond to help. One key area is helping others in the community who have been faced with critical illnesses and are in need of assistance.

The Exchange Club offers three ways to participate. One is to attend events, such as the Oyster Roast, and bid on auction items. Secondly, any silent auction item can be donated throughout the year for future events. If you have something that you believe could be used as an auction item, don’t hesitate to contact drich@cityoffollybeach.com.  Lastly, you can be an Event Sponsor for just $150. Sponsors get two tickets, a logo on Sponsor Banners throughout the event and after parties.

The Club’s mission statement describes their focus. “Exchange, America’s Service Club, is a group of men and women working together to make our communities better places to live through programs of service in Americanism, Community Service, Youth Activities, and its national project, the Prevention of Child Abuse.” Memberships are available, and meetings occur on the first and third Thursdays of every month at 206 W. Indian Avenue. Recently, they won a National Outstanding Community Service Award for Skin Cancer Screenings.
