2013 Folly Beach Wahine Classic

folly-beach-wahine-classicThe Hawaiian word “Wahine” means “water woman,” and you can be sure that this weekend’s SSC ESA Folly Beach Wahine Classic will shine the spotlight on the most skilled water woman Folly has to offer. The popular all-female surfing competition returns to the Washout June 1 and 2.

In recent years, over 80 athletes have participated in the contest, and a large crowd is expected on the sand to see Shortboard, Longboard, Open Stand Up Paddle, Open Fun One, Open Body Board, and Push and Surf categories. The Longboard and Shortboard categories are divided up in to Pro, Menehune 12 and under, Girls 13-17, Women 18-34, Ladies 35+, and Open Novice, for first time competitors. The Pro divisions are a new addition to this year’s competition, and the winners will take home $1,000.

The 2013 Folly Beach Wahine Classic benefits Surfer’s Healing, A Foundation for Autism, which introduces autistic children to the sport of surfing. Through their day camp program, children get to surf in tandem with some of the best surfers the sport has to offer. The Folly Beach Surfer’s Healing camp will be August 21.

The registration deadline for the Wahine Classic has passed, but spectators are welcome to bring a blanket to watch all the surfing excitement. The contest begins at 8 a.m. Saturday and Sunday mornings on Folly’s Washout.
