Summer is far off though we have the perfect break for you. The Taste of Folly will be held this Saturday, January 23rd from 12:00-4:00. Weather looks good for visiting booths on Center Street from each restaurant. Sample the familiar and new items chefs are planning for the upcoming season.

Stay around for fun events like the hot dog eating contest, the “server olympics”, chili cookoff and live music. Make note that Center Street will be closed for this event. Also, if you would like to enter the chili cookoff, email us for entry rules.

Folly Beach Fishing Report 01/15/10

Friday, January 15th, 2010

P1010127_-_CroppedWho would be fishing in this weather? Well, the extreme cold snap has fortunately passed and midday high temperatures are reaching into the 60s. Highs in the 60s are also forecasted for the next week. There’s no doubt you’ll still need some of your winter gear but fishing has returned as something to be enjoyed rather than endured. The redfish pictured was caught just yesterday afternoon.

Our fishery has become quite simple and redfish are the only real target right now. These fish have begun to form remarkably large schools. These schools can literally number in the hundreds. A redfish’s primary concern right now is to avoid the bottlenose dolphin who feed aggressively on them. Redfish will congregate in shallow water on the flats where it is both hard for dolphins to reach them but also easier for the fish the sense any threat.

Accordingly, anglers have to become stealthy and very conscious of any noise they make when approaching these schools. We’ve been using white Gulp! jerk shad with good success. I like to fish these artificial baits on flutter hooks because of the action the hooks make when moving through the water. Ultimately, you may have to wait for the schools to gradually come closer to you instead of pursuing them. Cracked blue crab fished on the bottom can be very effective. It puts a nice scent in the water and even wary redfish find it hard to resist!

Please feel free to contact me with any questions.

See you on the water!

New Years Resolutions in Action

Saturday, January 2nd, 2010

Another New Year’s has come and gone. I was surprised to find that roughly 48% of us make New Years resolutions, the most popular seem to be to lose something (weigh or debt) or to find something (longevity with better health). Maybe it is to just reduce caffeine, nicotine or alcohol consumption, after all we can’t give them up entirely.

Now, for those of you who indicated the desire for physical fitness, it’s time to start training now for Save the Light 5k Run here on Folly Beach on February 6th. Save The Light Inc, a nonprofit organization, needs your help to save the Morris Island Lighthouse. What better way to get motivated and keep that resolution than doing something that benefits your health and our historic community.  To register, click here.

For those of you who kept their resolution of physical fitness last year, the River Front Race is right around the corner. The River Front Race Festival begin on January 15 and end n January 17. For a complete schedule of event, click here.
