Folly Beach Christmas Parade

Wednesday, December 23rd, 2009

DSC02613A holiday tradition, the Folly Beach Christmas Parade, returned to the streets last weekend. The parade included Santa and Mrs. Claus and their elves as well as marching groups, living history re-enactors and festival queens.

The Folly Beach Christmas parade began at 1 p.m. Saturday starting at the entrance to Little Oak Island and ending on Arctic Avenue.  Attendants and attendee started lining up by 11:00 in anticipation of the days festivities.  The route begin on the Folly River bridge and moved across to the business district.  A short distance of less than a mile, it’s funny how it take us longer to line up than the whole parade takes.  This years marks the biggest success yet…wonder what will happen next year?

Where you able to celebrate with us? Even if you weren’t, chances are you have memories from years past. If you were here I would love to hear stories and see pictures. Post here, and as always, email hollie@follybeach.com your pictures to be posted on the site.

Folly Beach Fishing Report 12/14/09

Wednesday, December 16th, 2009

DSCF0690_-_CopySo far, December has had more than its fair share of rainy and windy days. The good news is that when conditions have allowed, the fishing has been excellent. Water temperature is still close to 60 degrees and fish continue to feed aggressively.  Try to take advantage of the next few weeks before chillier weather sets in!

For trout, we’ve been having the most success with mud minnows under popping corks. Try adjusting how far below the popping cork you suspend your minnow. The difference in just a foot can sometimes make a big impact. Target areas like oyster beds, creek mouths and docks. I like popping corks with brass beads that can make a loud clack that attracts fish.

As the winter approaches, redfish have begun their standard practice of forming large schools.  You can find these fish on the flats but also along grass banks. The size of these schools can be staggering, numbering as high as several hundred. We found several schools today that held 50+ fish; it is truly a sight to behold. The fish do tend to be spooky so you’ll need to use extra caution when approaching.  Fishing live bait such as cut mullet or blue crab on the bottom and waiting for the schools of fish to come to you can be the ticket.

Sheepshead action has really turned on recently. For these fish, focus on docks, concrete pilings and other pieces of structure that are covered with barnacles or oysters. Fiddler crabs, oyster or pieces of shrimp all work well as bait. These fish can try your patience because they are notorious bait stealers but they are so tasty it is worth the effort.

Please feel free to contact me with any questions.

See you on the water!

Folly Beach Citizen of the Year

Friday, December 11th, 2009

unknown

“A voice for those who cannot speak; A warrior for the defenseless; A guardian for the helpless; A rescuer of those who are abused; A friend to all animals, large and small,” reads the plaque presented to this year’s Folly Beach Citizen of the Year, Carol Linville. Linville was presented with the plaque on December 5 by the Mayor Pro Tem, Laura Beck, at the Folly Beach Police Department Christmas Party and Awards Dinner.

“I was completely shocked and am so humbled and honored by this recognition from the City,” said Linville. “Bob and I are very fortunate to have lived on Folly for 34 years and have been privileged to serve Folly and help our community in many ways over these many years.”

Linville has established the Folly Beach Animal Control Kennel, helped to put into place ordinances to protect the city’s animals, and, perhaps her biggest accomplishment, founded Pet Helpers which has grown immensely since its beginnings as a weekly adopt-a-pet column in 1976. Pet Helpers is now a fully staffed Adoption Center and Spay/Neuter Clinic that serves not only Folly Beach but the entire Lowcountry.

Linville has worked tirelessly to improve the welfare of animals in the region, including successfully initiating the first animal welfare ordinance for Charleston County in 1988, co-founding Humane Net, a coalition of animal welfare groups in the tri-county area, in 1997, and has been active in establishing trap-neuter-release programs.

“This has been a 25-year process and we have come a long way. The strong partnership between Pet Helpers and Folly Beach is very special and is a win-win for all animals and people in our community,” Linville said.

Linville credits her success to community support and partnerships with groups including the Folly Beach City Council and law enforcement agencies.

The Humours of Folly

Friday, December 4th, 2009

PHOTOGRAPHER FRANK BRADEN  OF “THE HUMOURS OF FOLLY” FAME IS BACK IN TOWN!

Frank is the artist behind the book that everyone who loves Folly (and that’s just about everyone who’s ever dug their toes in her sun-baked sand) is raving about. Frank’s been making the rounds, doing signings here, there and everywhere – did you see him at the Surf Bar or the Holiday Inn, Barnes & Noble or Waldenbooks? Maybe you saw him at the Oasis Bar & Grill or Plum Elements or at the S.C. Aquarium. Roseanne, who lives on Folly, met Frank at the Aquarium last week. The book stopped her in her tracks. “Folly is so hard to describe to someone who doesn’t know,” she said. “This book does it. It captures Folly perfectly.”

Shutterbug, the nationally acclaimed photography magazine, this month gave “The Humours of Folly” the highest praise possible. It selected it as one of the top photography books for the year by putting it on its recommended gift list. Frank Braden is doing his part to put Folly into the national vernacular.

This picture of Frank may be black and white, but when it comes to his book – as the folks at Shutterbug say – “Braden hits you over the head with color!”

If you’re looking for the book – it’s available at shops and other retail locations on Folly and throughout the Lowcountry. It’s also available through the publisher at www.jogglingboardpress.com.

The book is BIG. It’s funny. It’s poignant. It’s exploding with the Life of Folly!
