Folly Beach Fishing Report 11/24/09

Wednesday, November 25th, 2009

DSCF0723 - CopyLike the holiday season, fishing is now in full swing. Anglers are reporting days replete with dozens of trout and large redfish. Water temperatures are still plenty warm to accommodate great fishing. A day on the water could be an exciting way to show relatives and guests a slice of the Lowcountry.

It’s hard to beat this time of year for trout. Paddletail plastic grubs on jig heads are working very well. Try a variety of colors although much like last season I am hard pressed to find one that outperforms the Chicken on a Chain pattern. Anglers should also consider D.O.A.’s 3” shrimp in Glow and Clear with Red Glitter. Try fishing these plastic shrimp under a popping cork.

Both the aforementioned grubs and shrimp will work for redfish. With water clarity continuing to improve, sight fishing conditions are great. When casting to redfish in the grass or on the flats, I’ll usually switch over to a jerk shad rigged weedless with the hook point embedded in its back. This rig will allow you to fish without constantly snagging or getting hung up.

Folly Beach Fishing Report 11/09/09

Monday, November 9th, 2009

follyfishing November is one of the best months of the year to fish. Temperatures are pleasant and the fish are eager. There is great fishing in the waters that surround Folly Beach and your time will certainly be rewarded.

Redfish are responding well to live bait. While earlier in the year we may have focused more on cut and live bait on the bottom, we now turn increasingly to bait suspended beneath popping corks. Although live shrimp are a great offering, I prefer mud minnows because they are heartier. Float these popping corks with current, make an occasional twitch and then hold on!

For trout, we’ve been using mostly plastic artificial baits. Not much has changed since the last report when I recommended plastic paddletail grubs on jig heads. These rigs are great because you can work all parts of the water column and probe deeper pockets of water including around docks. Make sure you vary the speed of your retrieve; you’ll find that a change of pace can often trigger a strike.

While we spend less time targeting flounder, it is worth mentioning that recently flounder fishing has been excellent. They have been responding well to white plastic paddletail grubs and white jerkshad bumping along a sandy bottom.

Please feel free to contact me with any questions.

See you on the water!
